Most governance systems measure what you hold. 505 Systems measures something harder to fake: sustained effort over time. This is what Proof of Grit means — and why it changes who governance serves.

Most governance systems measure one thing: what you hold.

Tokens. Stake. Shares. The balance at the time of the vote. This is not governance. This is a snapshot. You arrive, you vote, you disappear — and the snapshot counts your weight as if you were there all along.

The problem is not that people game this. The problem is that the system was designed to be gamed. One token, one vote means the question of who governs is always the same question: who bought the most?

What Gets Measured

The governance weight in 505 Systems is designed to be calculated through Dynamic Proximity Calculus — three factors that together produce a single score, as documented in the Pink Paper.

Structural Impact: Did your contribution change the architecture of what exists? Not ideas. Not activity. Verifiable shifts in the ecosystem — code shipped, infrastructure built, proposals passed that changed how the system operates.

Weighted Resonance: Alignment between stated values and demonstrated action. Peer-verified. On-chain where possible (peer-reviewed via governance proposals in Phase 0, migrating on-chain as the protocol matures). You cannot claim resonance. You accumulate it.

Consistent Energy: This is the factor that matters most for what we call Proof of Grit.

Consistent Energy is not volume. It is not the burst contributor who shows up every six months and floods the proposal board. It is sustained presence — the contributor the ecosystem can count on. The one who shows up when the decision is hard, not just when the spotlight is easy.

The score compounds with consistent participation. It decays without activity. You cannot rest on what you built last year. The river keeps moving.

This is not punitive. It is calibration. Governance weight should reflect current engagement with the organism, not a historical record that can be purchased on a secondary market.


Why Grit Is Hard to Fake

Token-weighted governance can be purchased in hours. A flash loan attack can acquire millions of governance tokens in a single block and return them after the vote.

Consistent Energy cannot be fast-forwarded.

The DPC scoring period runs over time — every contribution logged, every period of absence noted, every return weighted against what came before. You can buy tokens. You cannot buy months of consistent work. You cannot retroactively fill the absence that your governance score reflects.

The machine knows when you were here. It knows when you were not.

This is what Proof of Grit means in practice: governance weight that reflects the contributor who stayed when staying was difficult. The one who reviewed proposals when no one was watching. The one who filed the documentation nobody else wanted to file. The one who kept building when the ecosystem needed builders more than it needed voters.


What This Changes

Traditional DAO governance rewards the wealthy. DPC governance is designed to reward the committed.

These are not the same population.

The person who has been contributing for fourteen months — building, testing, reviewing, teaching — earns more weight than the person who arrived last week with a large wallet. Not because of ideology. Because their sustained presence is evidence. Evidence that they are inside the organism. Evidence that they understand what they are voting on.
